»Global Kids«|The whole world right next door!
Bottrop’s children in black and white and without filters.
Bottrop is colorful, diverse, and home to people from all over the world. Right in time for the International Weeks Against Racism (starting March 14th), I am launching my new photo project – and I am looking for your support!
Five years after my project "Kinderseelen" (Children's Souls), I want to make a strong visual statement for our hometown: My goal is to photograph one child from as many of the nations represented in Bottrop as possible.
What are the photos about?
This is not your typical, highly polished family photo. The phrase "Smile for the camera!" is strictly banned in my studio. 😉 I want to show real, authentic faces. The children will be photographed wearing dark clothing against a simple background in expressive black and white. No forced smiles, just the way they are in that very moment. The face, the eyes, and the pure personality of your child are the main focus. The final photo series is meant to send a clear message: We have different roots, but we are all equally valuable. We are the future of Bottrop.
Who am I looking for?
Children aged 5 to 10 years.
Families living in Bottrop who want to represent their nation/roots.
Very important – inclusion is a given: I explicitly invite all children, regardless of their individual abilities, physical or mental disabilities, or health conditions. Every child is unique and perfect exactly the way they are.
Participation and the photo shoot are, of course, completely free of charge.
How the selection works (A sincere request for understanding):
Because my goal is to represent each home country once, it is very likely that several families will apply for certain countries. Since the project would otherwise exceed its limits, I have to make a selection.
One thing is extremely important to me: This is not a casting! Every child is wonderful and absolutely perfect just the way they are. To make a 100% fair decision and not favor anyone based on looks or how fast they applied, a lottery (random draw) will decide if there are multiple applications for the same country.
Please don't be angry or disappointed if the draw doesn't fall your way this time. Just your interest and willingness to be part of this statement for diversity means the world to me!
How to apply:
Please apply by April 30, 2026, exclusively using the contact form at the bottom of this page.
Just send me a quick message with:
The name and exact age of your child.
The names of the parents/legal guardians.
Which nation/home country you are representing.
Important legal note upfront: Since this is a public art project, both legal guardians (usually mother and father) must give their written consent that I may photograph the child and use/publish the resulting images for this project (on my website, social media, in exhibitions, and possible print media).
(You deliberately do not need to send a photo of your child in advance – because looks play absolutely no role in the draw!)
After the deadline, I will take my time to do the draw and get back to everyone shortly to either inform you or arrange the shooting dates. I am so looking forward to your messages and to creating an unfiltered picture of our city together with you!
About the Photographer
My name is Michael Kleinespel, and I photograph with passion and purpose.
I lived and worked in Frankfurt am Main for almost 25 years before returning to the Ruhr area. At 63, with decades of experience behind the camera, I feel it is time to give something back to society.
»Global Kids« is not a commercial job for me. It is a project close to my heart. It is my contribution to a world of respect and togetherness. I want to show what truly connects our cities: our children. Pure, strong, and without filters.
I fund and organize this project myself. This allows me to keep it strictly social and artistically free. My goal is not to promote myself. My goal is to give visibility to those who are our future – no matter where their roots are.
